While the origin of the word "Hoosier" isn't exactly clear, it has been used as a term to signify residents of the state of Indiana since the early 1800s. It is easy to see why the nickname was chosen to represent the athletics program of Indiana University. Traced back to the Cumberland dialect of England, the term is thought to represent people who lived on high hills.
