The 49ers were the first major league professional sports franchise to be based in San Francisco. They were part of the All-American Football Conference until merging with the NFL in 1950. The 49ers name was selected in recognition of the pioneering and adventurous spirit of men involved in the 1849 Gold Rush at the Sierra Nevada Mountains, east of San Francisco. Between 1988 and 1990, the 49ers set an amazing league record with 18 consecutive road victories. The 49ers were also the first NFL franchise to win back-to-back Super Bowls under different head coaches.

Seattle Seahawks - Qwest Field - NFL Panorama

This panorama of the Seattle Seahawks playing at Qwest Field was photographed by Robert Pettit. Qwest Field’s open-air design offers views of Mount Rainier, Puget Sound, the Seattle skyline, and the Olympic Mountains. In 1975, after Seattle was awarded an NFL franchise, a contest was held to let fans pick the new club name. The Seahawk, a powerful bird in local Indian lore, was selected. In 1976, the Seahawks played their first season in the NFL as a member of the NFC West Division. In their second season they switched to the AFC West Division and, in 2002, they switched back to the NFC West. The Seahawks were the first club to have played in both AFC and NFC Championship Games.
St. Louis Rams - Edward Jones Dome - NFL Panorama

This panorama, taken by James Blakeway, brings into focus the on-field action of the St. Louis Rams playing to their home crowd at the Edward Jones Dome. This game included the jersey retirement ceremony for Isaac Bruce, the most prolific receiver in franchise history, and featured the Rams wearing throwback jerseys from 1995-1999 as a tribute. One of the oldest franchises in the NFL, the Rams joined the league in 1937. The Rams were the first American professional football team with a logo on their helmets, thanks to a team member who was a commercial artist in the off-season. The Rams’ history includes League Championship wins in 1945 and 1951, and Super Bowl champions in 1999.

Often referred to as the “crown jewel” of the NFL, Raymond James Stadium has been home to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers since 1998. It boasts a number of unique features including a pirate ship that comes to life after the Buccaneers score a field goal or touchdown. The club’s nickname, “Buccaneers,” is a reference to the pirate legends of Southwest Florida. The Buccaneers are the first NFL franchise to have won the Super Bowl after losing at home on the opening day of the season. Their history includes playoff wins and Division, NFC and Super Bowl Championships.

This panorama, photographed by Christopher Gjevre, underscores the on-field action of the Tennessee Titans playing in front of their enthusiastic home crowd at LP Field. As a charter member of the American Football League, the club began play in 1960 as the Houston Oilers. In 1997, the club relocated to the state of Tennessee. In 1999, the club changed its name to the Tennessee Titans, introduced a new logo incorporating elements of the Tennessee state flag and moved into a new stadium at LP Field – home of the 12th Titan. The move to the Volunteer State brought good luck to the Titans, who went on to win the AFC Championship that year and earn a trip to Super Bowl XXXIV.

This panorama, photographed by James Blakeway, captures the Washington Redskins NFL football team as they move the ball towards the end zone at FedEx Field. The team has played their home games at a number of stadiums over the years including Griffith Stadium, Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium (better known as RFK Stadium) and their current home at FedEx Field located in Landover, MD. The team moved to Washington, D.C. in 1937 and became one of the NFL’s most successful franchises with three Super Bowl victories.
