This panoramic photograph of Auckland was taken by Christopher Gjevre. It features downtown Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand with a metropolitan population of over one million people. The city has become known as the "City of Sails" because of the high number of boats. Auckland's tallest structure is Sky Tower. At 1,076 feet, it is the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Auckland's tallest office building, at 551 feet, is the Royal and SunAlliance Centre, which is the tall, white building to the left of Sky Tower. To its right is the 42-story ANZ Centre.

Auckland, New Zealand Skyline Pictures

Auckland is New Zealand's largest and most populous metropolitan area, home to 1.5 million residents, or 32% of the country's total population. A little-known fact is that the city is also home to the largest Polynesian population anywhere on earth, influencing the wide range of architectural styles to be seen in Auckland skyline pictures.

Surrounded by water, the city is known as the "City of Sails" because of the large number of boats sailing its waters. Auckland pictures show pristine, crystal clear waters and a city surrounded by the Hauraki Gulf of the Pacific Ocean, the Hunua Ranges, the Manukau Harbour, and the Waitakere Ranges. This is one of the few cities on earth with harbors on two separate major bodies of water.

Settled by the Maori in the 1350s, this volcanic region is known for its fertile soil and great fishing waters. European settlement of New Zealand began in the early 1800s, with trams and railroad lines mirroring the traffic seen in the harbors surrounding the city. A wide range of architecture can be seen in Auckland skyline pictures, including Sky Tower, the tallest free-standing building in the Southern Hemisphere. This building reaches 1,076 feet in height and is known for its stunning panoramic views of the city. It's no surprise to learn that the building is a popular tourist destination for its restaurant at the top, which turns 360 degrees every hour.

Auckland skyline pictures will be interesting to watch in the coming years as the city is undergoing significant population growth. As the metropolis already has one of the highest population densities on earth, the only way for the city to continue to grow is up, which will give us many exciting views of new skyscrapers in the future.
