Located in the heart of the Chapel Hill campus, the stadium is known for its majestic setting and captivating atmosphere for Carolina™ Football. Many prominent expansions have taken place since the Tar Heels® home opened in 1927; the historic venue began with seating for 24,000 and has grown to a capacity of 63,000. The Kenan Football Center, behind the west end zone, houses the Hall of Honor and a variety of state-of-the-art facilities for the Carolina football program. The Blue Zone, located at the east end of the stadium, features suites and club seating for Tar Heel fans.

The stadium has undergone a number of renovations over the years, including the addition of The Loudermilk Center for Excellence and a premium seating section named the Blue Zone. This 150,000 square-foot facility serves all of Carolina’s student athletes across 28 sports. North Carolina football was established in 1888 and is a member of the ACC.

This panorama spotlights the opening tip-off between the nation's top two men's college basketball teams, as they competed to win the biggest game of the 2016-17 season – the 79th edition of the Division I Men's National Championship game at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona. In front of a crowd of 76,168 basketball enthusiasts, the North Carolina Tar Heels™ defeated the Gonzaga Bulldogs™ for the program's sixth national title, ultimately securing the redemption the team waited an entire year to celebrate. This was UNC coach Roy Williams' third national title, placing him in an elite group as one of only six Division I men's basketball coaches with three or more titles.

The arena, commonly referred to as the Dean Dome, seats 21,750 fans and is named after former North Carolina coach Dean Smith, who coached the team from 1961 to 1997. The Tar Heels are one of the most successful programs in NCAA history and, on March 2, 2010, became the second college basketball program to reach 2,000 wins. They are one of only three Division I Men's Basketball programs to have ever achieved 2,000 victories.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is represented in the ACC in NCAA Division I as the North Carolina Tar Heels. North Carolina football has been an ever-growingly popular team for Tar Heel fans since 1888. Across Carolina's first 121 seasons, the Tar Heels achieved an overall winning percentage of .566, multiple bowl game appearances, Southern Conference Championships and Atlantic Coast Conference titles. Tar Heel football has dozens of honors with past players being championed as All-Americans.
