Founded in 1801, the University of South Carolina is one of the nation's oldest educational institutions. Its athletics programs are known as the Gamecocks after Thomas Sumter, a hero of the Revolutionary War who was said to have fought "like a gamecock." The passion and tactics for the varsity team play itself is rivaled only by the dedication of its fans.

South Carolina football and baseball are among the most famous of these programs, particularly the football team; South Carolina football has played home games at Williams-Brice Stadium since 1934, and currently seats over 85,000 fans for home games.
