Originally settled in 4,000 BC, Jerusalem skyline pictures display one of the oldest continually-inhabited cities in the world. The city has historically been a site of great conflict, having been destroyed twice, besieged over 20 times, attacked over 50 times, and captured over 40 times. Under Suleiman the Magnificent in 1538, walls were built around the historic Old City. The city is of great historical and international importance not only for its Middle Eastern architecture, but also for its status as a holy city to the Abrahamic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
The four quarters of Old City are a major tourist destination, housing the Jewish, Christian, Muslim and Armenian Quarters. Surrounding this area, the Old City Walls are still visible. Landmarks are commonly of religious significance, and a primary driver of city economy. Images of Jerusalem today are reminiscent of ancient times due to the British Mandate, requiring all modern building construction to continue using Jerusalem stone. Jerusalem has a unique skyline as the city's appearance is not as modern as one might expect.
A prominent landmark in Jerusalem skyline pictures is the Dome of the Rock, a shrine located on the Temple Mount in Old City. It houses the rock from which Muhammad ascended to Heaven. Another significant site is the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus was crucified. The Arab neighborhood of Silwan, location of the ancient City of David, is another destination of great importance.
Jerusalem skyline pictures are a marvel to countless people worldwide because of its deep historical and religious significance. This is one of the holiest cities in religious tradition and consistently ranked among the top tourist destinations worldwide.
