Big Ben is actually a 15-ton bell that tolls the hours. The Roman numerals on the clock face measure 2 feet in length: the hour hand, 14 feet and the mechanism moving the hands is still wound manually. In the distance just right is Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of Britain's sovereigns since 1837.

Big Ben is actually a 15-ton bell that tolls the hours. In the distance just right of center is Buckingham Palace, the official London residence of Britain's sovereigns since 1837. On the far right is the world's largest Ferris wheel, the London Eye. It was created to celebrate the millennium and opened in January 2000. The ride takes 30 minutes and rises 450 feet above the River Thames in a fully enclosed capsule.

This panoramic photograph of the Tower Bridge was taken by James Blakeway. It features one of London's best known landmarks, the Tower Bridge, named after its own two impressive towers. Completed in 1894 and considered a masterpiece of its time, the middle of the bridge can be raised to permit large vessels to pass the Tower Bridge. It used to be raised about 50 times a day, but now is only raised 4 to 5 times per week. The bridge is 197 feet long and its towers rise to a height of 141 feet. To allow passage up the Thames of the large mastedships of the day, the bridge had to offer 140 feet of clearance.

Belfast, a WWII navel ship that has been permanently docked on the Thames since 1978 as an Imperial War Museum. The buildings in the distance are located in an area known as Canary Wharf, home of London's tallest building, One Canada Square, with its pyramid-shaped roof. On the left with its green glowing top is Tower 42, a cantilevered building with three asymmetrical sections hanging from the building's central core. The bullet-shaped building to its right is the 30 St Mary Axe.

Along the right riverbank is the world's largest Ferris wheel, the London Eye, rising 450 feet above the River Thames. Westminster Bridge crosses between the Palace of Westminster and the London Eye.
