With a metro area of over 15 million residents, London is the largest urban area in the United Kingdom and European Union, and also serves as the capital of England and the United Kingdom. Originally founded by the Romans over 2,000 years ago, London is situated in a strategic location along the River Thames, giving it strong transportation routes which have helped to build what is now seen in London skyline pictures.
As the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the world, London pictures display a capital of world culture and the only city to host the Summer Olympic Games three times. The city was once the largest in the world from 1831 - 1925, and while 45% of its residents are white Britons, London has become a diverse city where more than 300 languages are spoken.
Many of its buildings are of great historical significance, firmly attached in the minds of many internationally as a visual representation of London. With many of these historic locations along the River Thames, the most famous often include Westminster Bridge and the Palace of Westminster, containing the House of Commons and the House of Lords - making the Houses of Parliament in the United Kingdom. The most recognizable feature on the Palace of Westminster is Big Ben, the nickname of its famous clock tower.
Another among the most well-known London landmarks is the Tower Bridge, completed in the late 1800s, and a popular tourist attraction as the bridge's middle can be raised to allow large ships to continue down the River Thames. The impressive height of the tower is clearly visible across the London skyline and designed to raise over 140 feet to allow masted ships to pass. Along the riverbank, the London Eye - the world's largest Ferris wheel - can also be seen. Canary Wharf is the site of some of London's tallest buildings, including One Canada Square, Tower 42, and 30 St Mary Axe.
Often described as a capital of world culture, London skyline photos show the dazzling sights and landmarks from one of the most famous cities on earth. With some of the most iconic buildings, palaces and sights in the world, it's clear to see how London will continue to dazzle people from around the world for years to come.
