Vienna, Austria City Skyline Panoramic Picture

SKU: VIE1
This panoramic photograph of Vienna was taken by James Blakeway. Located along the banks of the Danube River and Canals, Vienna, the capital of Austria, is steeped with history and beautiful architecture. Centered prominently in the photograph is the famous St. Stephan's Cathedral, one of the chief Gothic buildings of Europe. Parts of the cathedral are the original 12th-century Romanesque structure, which was destroyed by fire. Rebuilt, it was again burned and partly destroyed in World War II and has since been restored. The city suffered heavy damage in World War II but the character remains much the same after the rebuilding.

Vienna, Austria Skyline Pictures

As the capital of, and largest city in Austria, Vienna is home to 2.4 million residents, more than 20% of the country's population. The ninth-largest city in the European Union, Vienna skyline pictures showcase the unique architecture of the cultural and economic center of Austria, once the largest German-speaking city in the world. Occupied as early as 500 BC, Vienna has been home to many peoples, including the Celts, Romans, Germanic Tribes, the Babenberg dynasty and the Habsburg Dynasty. Occupied by Hungary in the 1400s and formerly the capital of the Holy Roman Empire, Vienna skyline pictures show a city with clear influence from many cultures, giving it its own UNESCO World Heritage Site status.

Located on the banks of the Danube River, Vienna has been influenced by the city's ease of access along important transportation routes. Interestingly, Vienna has retained its historic character despite many buildings being burned or partly destroyed during World War II. One of the city's most historic landmarks is St. Stephen's Cathedral, among Europe's finest examples of Romanesque Gothic architecture. This is the central church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vienna and Archbishop, and has an iconic multicolored tile roof.

Vienna pictures show us interesting architecture in a city of multicultural influence. As the world's most popular destination for international conventions and congresses, it's easy to see by looking at a Vienna skyline picture how this beautiful city draws so many visitors.
