Chicago, IL Skyline Pictures

Chicago, also known as "the windy city", is located in Illinois and was incorporated in 1837. Chicago’s city skyline pictures consist of 234 square miles of scenery with a population of over 2.7 million, ranking it as third-largest city in the United States. Chicago gets its name from the French pronunciation of the Native American word "shikaakwa," meaning "wild onion" or "wild garlic." Chicago became a major transportation hub between the east and west which led to fast population growth. This fast increase in population called for a sewerage system and more buildings, foreshadowing Chicago’s impressive city skyline picture today.

The city of Chicago has not been without its challenges, with the Great Chicago Fire in 1871 wiping out 1/3 of the city. Afterwards, Chicago’s skyline picture experienced massive growth. This construction brought about the beginning of what is now the Chicago skyline panoramic picture. During this building period, the world’s first skyscraper was constructed in 1885, created using steel skeleton construction. This building's name is the Home Insurance Building. It brought on the sky scraper era, something very prominent in Chicago skyline pictures. Unfortunately, the Home Insurance Building can no longer be seen in Chicago skyline pictures taken in modern times, as it was destroyed in 1931 to construct the new Field Building, now known as the LaSalle National Bank Building.

Some notable locations in Chicago skyline pictures are Willis Tower (Sears Tower), The University of Illinois-Chicago, McCormick Place, and O’Hare International Airport. All of these were built during Richard J. Daley’s tenure. Willis Tower, formerly known as Sears Tower, can be seen in many Chicago skyline pictures. Completed in 1973, Willis Tower is a very important part of a Chicago skyline panoramic picture. In 2013, Willis Tower was the tallest building at 1,451 feet and 108 stories, but will be eclipsed by the completed construction of One World Trade Center in New York City. This new construction will reach 1,776 feet tall and 105 stories. However, Willis Tower will remain the hallmark of Midwest skyscraper construction and any Chicago city skyline panorama would look incomplete without it.

A panoramic Chicago skyline picture fully displays that Chicago’s skyline is one of the worlds tallest and most dense. Chicago skyline pictures not only feature Willis Tower, but another of the tallest skyscrapers in the U.S., Trump International Hotel and Tower. Leading up to completion of One World Trade Center, these Chicago skyscrapers were the tallest in the U.S. Opening in 2008, Trump International Hotel and Tower is 1,170 feet tall, and was once designed to overtake the world record in building height; however, after September 11th, building plans changed and the size was scaled back. Inside this building is a much praised spa (The Spa at Trump) and restaurant (Sixteen). Chicago skyline pictures display a wide variety of popular and talked about buildings and areas.

Another prominent figure in Chicago skyline pictures is Lake Michigan. Lake Michigan is in almost every Chicago skyline panoramic photo. An important element of transportation in the region, Lake Michigan provides a beautiful element of Chicago skyline pictures with the city's buildings stunningly reflected in the foreground.
