Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach Jim Harbaugh. The game also kicks off a year-long celebration of Michigan Athletics' 150th Anniversary. The Michigan Wolverines intercollegiate competition officially began its rich and storied tradition in the season of 1865-66 and, since that time, the athletic teams have claimed many national championships, beginning with football’s 1901 national title.

Considered among the most elite of college programs, this panorama memorializes the Michigan-Notre Dame football rivalry at its finest. The historic first game between the Michigan Wolverines and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish dates back to 1887, with the Wolverines winning the first eight contests. Fast forward 125+ years and, in front of a NCAA-record crowd of 115,109, the Wolverines once again were victorious with a final score of 41-30. This game, “Under the Lights II,” was only the second night game ever played at the Big House. Michigan currently ranks ahead of Notre Dame in both winning percentage and all time wins.

This panorama, taken by James Blakeway, captures a historical moment as the Michigan Wolverines played their first night game at the Big House on September 10, 2011. The event set a new Michigan Stadium and NCAA attendance record with a crowd of 114,804 fans. To further celebrate the occasion, the team wore ‘legacy' uniforms highlighting design elements from past eras, including a large ‘M' on the front of the jersey and numbers on the sides of the helmet. In the 39th meeting between the schools, Michigan defeated Notre Dame 35-31 with the final touchdown recorded in the last seconds of the game. Michigan now holds a 23-15-1 advantage in the classic rivalry.

Since its inaugural season in 1927, Michigan Stadium has seen more than 40 million fans pass through its gates and hosted over 200 consecutive games with more than 100,000 fans attending each game. Many changes and renovations have continuously improved the quality of the facility, while increasing capacity to its current 109,901 seats. Michigan's largest regular-season home crowd was September 4, 2010, with 113,090 fans in attendance.

This panorama, taken by James Blakeway, captures the college ice hockey game between long-time rivals – the University of Michigan and Michigan State University. The match-up, known as "The Big Chill at the Big House," was held at Michigan Stadium on December 11, 2010. The event set a new world record for the largest crowd at an outdoor ice hockey game with attendance of 113,411. The past record set in May 2010, at the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championship game, was 77,803. This is the second outdoor ice hockey game to be played between the two storied programs. The first game, also a resounding success, occurred in 2001 and was referred to as the "Cold War."

Originally founded in 1817 in Detroit, the University of Michigan is a public research university represented in the Big Ten in NCAA Division I as the Michigan Wolverines. Home to over two dozen teams and counting, the most famous is the heavyweight Michigan Wolverines football program. Michigan football plays at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, long holding the title of the largest stadium in the nation. While the facility has an official capacity of 109,000, it has hosted crowds over 113,000, such as at the famous ice hockey matchup known as the "Big Chill at the Big House". This game was a repeat of teh "Cold War" from a decade earlier, when a full-size ice hockey rink was built within Michigan Stadium for play between Michigan and Michigan State.
