The game was played on the infield of the speedway, which ranks as the fourth-largest sports venue in America and possesses enough seats for approximately 160,000 people.

Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University - more popularly known as Virginia Tech - is home to its athletic teams known as the Virginia Tech Hokies. Established in 1872, as of 2017 it served over 60,000 active students and its 19 varsity teams participated in NCAA Division I in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Among the most popular of its programs is Virginia Tech football, making play at Lane Stadium/Worsham Field since 1965. After renovations over the years, as of 2012, Virginia Tech football can accommodate over 65,000 fans during home games.

With over 120 years of play, Hokies football has the 3rd longest bowl game streak in the nation, and has taken multiple conference titles. Lane Stadium is considered as the loudest stadium in collegiate football, and was voted the top spot in ESPN's "Top 20 Scariest Places to Play."
