Bergen is one of the most picturesque destinations in Scandinavia, surrounded by seven mountains and covering an area of 180 square miles. With a population of 425,000, Bergen is the second-largest city in Norway, and has a unique layout and architectural style thanks to surrounding geological features common to the country. Many of the city's suburbs are situated on small islands surrounding the city.
Skyline pictures of Bergen boast the city's most famous imagery: its harbor, known as among the most beautiful in the world. The city foundation over a millennium ago began on the shores of this harbor, and grew to become known for aquaculture, shipping, subsea technology and the petroleum industry. Most structures are located on or close to one of many nearby fjords or bays. Sheltered from the North Sea by islands, Bergen is a city with timeless architecture beautifully framed by natural geology.
The harbor so commonly featured in Bergen pictures often displays colorful architecture accented with a rainbow of nighttime lights reflecting in the water. Many of these structures are old merchant buildings. The harbor was also the location of the famous Battle of Vågen in 1665. Another area of the harbor frequented by tourists is the well-known Bergen Fish Market. An interesting element seen in Bergen skyline pictures at night is the lighted route of a cable car track which travels up Mount Floyen, which is one of the highest points that can be seen in the city.
Bergen is fascinating in the city center continues to house old-world architecture and charm despite being Norway's busiest port. One can admire both the historical significance of this Scandinavian city, as well as the beautiful fjords and mountains of Norway, when looking at a Bergen panorama.
