The bridge was opened to vehicular traffic on May 28, 1937, with over 2 billion vehicles crossing to date. In the background is downtown San Francisco with the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge. Centered in the downtown area is the world famous Transamerica Pyramid Center. Further left is the former federal prison located on Alcatraz Island, commonly referred to as “The Rock.”

Visible in the distance is the Golden Gate Bridge which has become an internationally recognized symbol of San Francisco and was the longest suspension bridge span in the world when it was completed in 1937. As the leading cultural center of Northern California, San Francisco skyline pictures show off a beautiful city on the Pacific Coast that has grown to become the second most densely populated metro area in the U.S. after New York City. San Francisco experienced significant growth during and after World War II as it was a common port of use for military operations along the Pacific Rim. In the following years, mass immigration would build up what we see in today's San Francisco skyline pictures to create a city often at the center of liberal activism in the United States.

Certainly, the most famous subject of San Francisco skyline panoramas is the Golden Gate bridge, connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The city undertook a number of important civil engineering projects immediately prior to, during and following the Great Depression; San Francisco has since been credited as a strength in the banking industry, as none of its banks failed during this time period. Some others of the many engineering projects that contributed to the strength of the San Francisco skyline include the streetcar system, O'Shaughnessy Dam, Hetch Hetchy Reservoir and Aqueduct, and perhaps most famously, the federal prison Alcatraz.

A number of other famous buildings can be seen within San Francisco skyline pictures. Some of these buildings in the world famous pyramid-shaped Transamerica Building, the iconic Coit Memorial Tower on Telegraph Hill, and the picturesque clock on the Ferry Building downtown.
