Memphis, TN Skyline Pictures

As the largest city in Tennessee and largest city on the Mississippi River, Memphis skyline pictures show one of the most diverse and historically rich cities in the Southeastern United States. With a population of over 1.3 million residents, Memphis has only been overtaken by largest population in its state by Nashville in recent years.

Originally settled by the Mississippian Culture and Chickasaw Indian Tribe, the area of today's Memphis city skyline has been occupied for over 10,000 years, but was formally founded as a U.S. city in 1819. The city has a diverse cultural background of Native American, Spanish and French influence. Thanks to its position on bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River, the Memphis city skyline developed to become a major transportation center during the 1800s, and was named after the city with similar trade influence in Egypt.

Because of its position overlooking water, many Memphis skyline pictures display the Hernando de Soto Bridge, named after the Spanish explorer who documented the region during the 1500s. Pyramid Arena can be seen in many Memphis photos, inspired by the Egyptian influence in the city's name; it is one of the most prominent landmarks in Memphis panoramas and is the 6th largest pyramid in the world behind the Great Pyramid of Giza, Khafre's Pyramid, the Luxor Hotel, the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid.

Other famous landmarks in Memphis skyline pictures include AutoZone Park (home to the Memphis Redbirds baseball team) and FedEx Forum (home to the Memphis Grizzlies basketball team).

As an international destination of the Southeastern U.S., Memphis is not only a city with great historical importance, but significant cultural influence as well. Famous for its live music festivals and destination for barbeque contests and cuisine, the dazzling city skyline of Memphis, Tennessee should be an inspiration to many to experience this city for themselves.
