By far, the most famous landmark to be seen in any Pisa skyline picture is the world-known "Leaning Tower of Pisa." While the field surrounding the tower is a popular destination for tourists, the city has a number of other famous structures to be seen. The famous Leaning Tower of Pisa is actually the bell tower of the city's cathedral, aptly named Pisa Cathedral. The cathedral is an excellent example of Romanesque architecture, and began construction in 1063 and concluded with the Leaning Tower in 1174. While the bell tower is the location of many often-humorous moments captured in Pisa photos, the tower began to take on its famous lean almost immediately after completion. The site itself is collectively known as the Campo dei Miracoli, home to the great religious structures of the Baptistry and the Camposanto.
Another famous feature seen in Pisa pictures is its University, originally founded in 1343 and attended by over 30,000 students today. The most famous historical fact of the University is perhaps that the world-known scholar, Galileo, was one of its students.
As a city with thousands of years of history, it's understandable why Pisa skyline pictures hold so much fascination today. While the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa is easily the most famous icon, many other wonders can be found within for all those interested in Roman and Italian history and architecture.
