The Red Wings’ new home is part of the 50-block area that connects Downtown and Midtown into one contiguous, walkable space known as The District Detroit. The arena was designed to be as loud and intimidating as possible for opponents. The seats are closer to the ice, and the steep bowl and overhanging gondolas give fans a sense of being right on top of the action, all providing some of the best sightlines in the NHL®.

The Joe has been home to the Red Wings since 1979 and was the venue for several records including the NHL®-best home winning percentage with over 800 victories,16 division championships, a 25 consecutive season Playoff run and four Stanley Cup® Championships. Hockeytown® fans have supported their home town team with a sell-out streak at Joe Louis Arena dating back to December 19, 2010. For the final season, several celebratory events and fan promotions were held and a commemorative 'Farewell Season at the Joe' patch was developed to close this chapter in Detroit Red Wings history.

The annual event, held by the National Hockey League® on or around New Year’s Day, celebrates the history and tradition of outdoor hockey. This year’s event was played at The Big House® on the University of Michigan campus and the NHL announced an attendance record of 105,491 during the third period. In the end, the Maple Leafs edged out the Red Wings in a shootout, resulting in a final score of Toronto 3, Detroit 2. The first NHL Winter Classic was held in 2008.
