This panorama of the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic®, taken by Christopher Gjevre, featured its first Canadian team, as the Toronto Maple Leafs® and the Detroit Red Wings® took to the ice.  The annual event, held by the National Hockey League® on or around New Year’s Day, celebrates the history and tradition of outdoor hockey.  This year’s event was played at The Big House® on the University of Michigan campus and the NHL announced an attendance record of 105,491 during the third period.  In the end, the Maple Leafs edged out the Red Wings in a shootout, resulting in a final score of Toronto 3, Detroit 2.  The first NHL Winter Classic was held in 2008.

This panorama of the Detroit Red Wings was taken by James Blakeway in the opening game of the 2011 Stanley Cup® Playoffs – a contest that marked the Red Wings 20th consecutive season in the playoffs. One of the Original Six™ teams of the NHL®, the Red Wings were established in 1926.  Winning their first Stanley Cup Championship in 1936, they repeated the feat the following year, becoming the first American team to win consecutive Stanley Cup Championships. As of 2011, the Red Wings have won more Stanley Cup Championships than any other NHL franchise based in the United States.
