Text on Panorama
This panorama of Mariucci Arena on the University of Minnesota campus, photographed by James Blakeway, features the Minnesota Golden Gopher hockey team playing WCHA rival University of Minnesota-Duluth. Mariucci Arena is named in honor of long time hockey coach John Mariucci, who was also a standout hockey and football player for the Gophers. Mariucci coached the Gophers from 1952 to 1966 with the exception of the 1955-1956 season. Dedicated in 1993, Mariucci Arena has a hockey game capacity of 10,000. University of Minnesota Hockey enjoys a long history, becoming a varsity sport in 1921. The Golden Gophers have won five national championships in men’s hockey.
