Founded in 1845, the United States Naval Academy sponsors several dozen varsity sports teams known as the Navy Midshipmen. The teams participate in NCAA Division I, and hold membership in a number of conferences. Navy football is among the most popular of these teams, and have played in many bowl games and other NCAA historic events. The most widely anticipated of these is the annual Army-Navy football game. The Air Force football team is another to compete of the three for the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, given to the academy who takes the most victories for the current season.

The U.S. Naval Academy has many varsity teams due to the general, unique requirement for all attendees to participate in athletics. While this is mandatory, students also have the option to partake in club or intramural sports. Other exceptions include joining the Drum and Bugle Corps or joining other non-athletic Brigade Support Activities.
