This panorama, taken by Christopher Gjevre, captures the thrilling finale of the longest regular-season game in the storied history of the BIG EAST Conference between the Notre Dame Fightin’ Irish® and the Louisville Cardinals in a matchup between two top-25 programs. The Fighting Irish® and Cardinals have been known for their overtime battles, but this meeting was one for the record books. The game was decided in five overtimes before Notre Dame earned a sensational 104-101 victory. This game marked the sixth time in the last eight meetings that these two programs played past regulation. It was truly a memorable night at the Purcell Pavilion.

Notre Dame’s debut in the ACC resulted in an impressive win over No. 7 ranked Duke, for a final score of 79-77. This was the fifth-straight time the Irish beat a Top 10 team at home and the first loss in an ACC opener for the Blue Devils in seven seasons. Purcell Pavilion, with its intimate environment, was the perfect backdrop for this historic game and has provided a home court advantage to men's and women's basketball and volleyball teams since its dedication in October 2009.

The two teams first met during the 1921-22 season and have played each other over 130 times. Since ice hockey was first established at Notre Dame in 1912, the program has greatly evolved. Today, in its fifth decade at the Division I level and playing in the NCAA as a member of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), the Irish™ have earned multiple NCAA Tournament and Frozen Four appearances. Starting in the 2013-14 season, Notre Dame will join Hockey East.
