Amsterdam, Netherlands Skyline Picture - Panoramic Picture

This panoramic photograph of Amsterdam was taken by James Blakeway. It features a panoramic view of a typical street scene in Amsterdam with its many bridges, canals and bicycles. It shows the intersection of the Keizersgracht and Leidsegracht canals. Because property taxes were determined on the width of a home, most of these 17th century houses were built very tall and narrow. Inner staircases were often steep and narrow to maximise living space. Most houses have a large hook high on the outside of the house to more efficiently move household furnishings in and out of the house.

This panoramic photograph of Amsterdam was taken by James Blakeway. A city marked by many boats, bridges, and canals, Amsterdam is the constitutional capital and largest city of the Netherlands. This culturally rich city is a major port joined with the North Sea and the Rhine by canals. The city is built on piles and is cut by some 40 canals crossed by about 400 bridges. This photograph features “Magere Brug” or “Skinny Bridge,” a hand-cranked drawbridge popular with tourists. A popular tourist destination, Amsterdam also has an important stock exchange and is a major center of the diamond-cutting industry.

This panoramic photograph of Athens was taken by James Blakeway. Athens is the capital and largest city of Greece and host city to the 2004 Summer Olympics. The fortification centered in this photograph is the Acropolis. Atop the Acropolis is the Parthenon, chief temple of the goddess Athena built between 447 and 432 B.C. and considered a supreme example of Doric architecture. Behind the Parthenon is Mount Lycabettos, the highest hill of Athens. The brightly lit structure to the lower left is the Theater of Herod Atticus, built by the Romans in 160 A.D.. Various performances still take place in this ancient amphitheater today.

This panoramic photograph of Auckland was taken by Christopher Gjevre. It features downtown Auckland, the largest city in New Zealand with a metropolitan population of over one million people. The city has become known as the “City of Sails” because of the high number of boats. Auckland’s tallest structure is Sky Tower. At 1,076 feet, it is the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Auckland’s tallest office building, at 551 feet, is the Royal and SunAlliance Centre, which is the tall, white building to the left of Sky Tower. To its right is the 42-story ANZ Centre.

This panoramic photograph of Barcelona was taken by James Blakeway. Located on the shores of the Mediterranean, Barcelona is Spain’s second largest city and capital of the Catalonia autonomous region of Spain. The hill at the far right is Montjuic, where most of the Olympic events of the 1992 games were held. At the base of the hill is the brown Palau Nacional with the Montjuic Castle on top of the hill. The Olympic stadium is directly behind Palau Nacional. Left of center in the distance is the famous Temple de la Sagrada Familia, Antonio Gaudi’s most ambitious and grandest architectural masterpiece and a symbol of the city itself.

This panoramic photograph of Bath was taken by James Blakeway. Located in western England on the river Avon, Bath is known for its hot mineral springs and Georgian architecture. The Royal Crescent can be seen to the upper left. Centered is Bath Abby. To its right is the recently renovated Empire Hotel. In the 18th century, Bath became the most fashionable spa in England. The Romans discovered the hot springs in the 1st century A.D. and built elaborate bathhouses. Unable to explain this natural occurrence, they called this place Aquae Sulis, believing the magic waters were the work of both the Celtic goddess Sulis and the Roman goddess Minerva.

This panoramic photograph of Belfast was taken by James Blakeway. Belfast is Northern Ireland's largest city with a population of nearly 500,000, a third of Northern Ireland's population. By 1900, Northern Ireland was one of Europe's great manufacturing regions and led the world in linen production and shipbuilding. The world's largest dry dock is located in Belfast. The ill-fated Titanic was built in Belfast by Harland and Wolff at the site of the two giant yellow cranes, which are referred to as Sampson and Goliath. At the far right in the distance is Parliament House.

This panoramic photograph of Bergen was taken by James Blakeway. It features one of the most beautiful harbors in the world. The first buildings in Bergen were alongside the harbor. This has been the center of the city for hundreds of years and you can see many of the old merchant buildings across the water. At the end of the harbor is the Fish Market. The lighted pathway is a cable car track that you can take up Mount Floyen to a spectacular viewing area that overlooks the fjords and mountains. What makes Bergen so special is its charm and atmosphere of an old city surrounded by the spectacular Norwegian fjords.

This panoramic photograph of Berlin was taken by James Blakeway. Featured at the end of Unter den Linden, a main street of eastern Berlin, is the Brandenburg Gate, which is the only remaining of 14 gates built in the 1700’s. Beyond the Brandenburg Gate is Tiergarten, a beautiful 630-acre park. To the right of Brandenburg Gate is the Reichstag which houses Germany’s federal Parliament. In the lower center of the panorama with its enormous copper dome is the Berlin Cathedral, an impressive 19th-century cathedral. Left of the cathedral is Palast de Republic, the parliament building of the former Socialist East Germany.

Separated by the Danube River, Buda is on the left and Pest on the right. The bridge with the large block towers is the Chain Bridge.

Left of Table Mountain is Devil’s Peak. Together, these mountains overlook the city and the area known as the city bowl. Tourism remains the most important economic key to Cape Town.

This aerial photograph of Cardiff was taken by James Blakeway. Cardiff is the capital and largest city of Wales. The River Taff flows through the city on the left. Centered in this panorama is Millennium Stadium with its retractable roof, home to the Welsh Rugby Union and FAW Football. The tall building next to the stadium is BT Stadium House. The white building standing on the Cardiff Bay waterfront is the 5-star St David’s Hotel and Spa. To its right, the luminescent slope-roofed building is Wales Millennium Centre, a premier performing arts venue. Cardiff was a prosperous coal shipping port in the 19th and early 20th Centuries.

This panoramic photograph of Dublin was taken by James Blakeway. It features Dublin’s City Center as seen looking across the Liffey River. The first bridge as you look up the Liffey River is the famous Halfpenny Bridge followed by the Millennium and Grattan bridges. On the right is O’Connell Street, one of Dublin’s main shopping streets. The building with columns along O’Connell Street is the General Post Office, sight of the bloody 1916 uprising that ultimately led to Ireland’s independence from England. In front of the post office, standing almost 394 feet tall is Dublin Spire, which stands where a memorial to Horatio Nelson once stood.

This panoramic photograph of Edinburgh was taken by James Blakeway. It features a view of Edinburgh looking up Princes Street with Edinburgh Castle in the distance overlooking the city. Perched on a volcanic crag, Edinburgh Castle is the most famous of the Scottish Castles and is home of the Scottish Crown Jewels. The brightly lit building in front of Edinburgh Castle is the Bank of Scotland. The bright steeple slightly left of center is St. Giles' Cathedral which is located along the Royal Mile, a historic street located between Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the queen's official residence in Scotland.

Centered in the photograph is the Piazza del Duomo, originally commissioned in 1296 as a cathedral so magnificent that it will be impossible to make it either better or more beautiful with the industry and power of man. The covered bridge to the left is the Ponte Vecchio and has spanned the Arnno river at narrowest point since Roman times.

This panoramic photograph of downtown Frankfurt was taken by James Blakeway. It features a twilight view of downtown Frankfurt with the Main River on the left. Centered in the photo is Frankfurt's tallest building, the Commerzbank Tower. The building with the white lit, crown-shaped top is the Krone Hochhaus. The Romans founded Frankfurt in the first century AD. It was the virtual capital of Germany from 1816 to 1866 and is now an industrial, commercial, financial and transportation center. During World War II (1939-1945), the city was badly damaged by bombing but has since been rebuilt into one of the world's great international cities.

This panoramic photograph of Hong Kong was taken by James Blakeway. It features a magnificent twilight view of Victoria Harbor with downtown Hong Kong to the right and Kowloon to the left. The tall building centered in the photograph with two white antennae is the Bank of China Tower and to its right with the pyramid-shaped roof is Central Plaza. The territory had been under British control since 1841 and returned to China in 1997. Hong Kong, one of the world's major financial centers, capitalizes on its time zone advantages and keeps four stock exchanges open aroud the clock.

This panorama of Hong Kong was taken by James Blakeway. The area across Victoria Harbor on the left is known as Kowloon and to the right is downtown Hong Kong. Centered in downtown, with its pyramid shaped roof and single spire, is the 78-story Central Plaza. The tall building centered in the photograph, with its two white antennae, is Bank of China Tower. Hong Kong was taken by the British Empire in the 19th Century and handed back to China in 1997. It is now a Special Administrative Region in the People's Republic of China. Hong Kong is a major seaport, financial center and business hub.

The body of water to the left is the Bosporus Strait with the Sea of Marmara in the distance. The Bosporus Strait connects the Aegean Sea to the Black Sea. The bridge in the foreground is the Galata Bridge which crosses the body of water referred as the Golden Horn. Istanbul is a city on two continents, Asia in the distant left of the photograph and Europe in the center and right of the photograph.

This panoramic photograph of Lisbon was taken by James Blakeway. It features the Portugal’s old port city of Lisbon with many of its beautiful buildings and landmarks. At the far left on the hill is St. George Castle. Across the bay, which is formed by the River Tagus as it flows into the Atlantic Ocean, is Cristo Rei, with arms stretched to welcome visitors. The red suspension bridge majestically spanning the river and port is named the April 25th Bridge, so named after the date of the 1974 revolution. Lisbon is scattered with impressive monuments from the time when Portugal, as the center of a wealthy empire, ruled over the seven seas.

Liverpool's tallest building is the 40-story West Tower-Liverpool. The building lit in yellow is New Hall Place, also known as the Royal & SunAlliance Building. The Royal Liver Building, with its two spires, features the world's largest clock faces at 25 feet in diameter. Liverpool Cathedral is lit to the far right. Beginning in 1715 with the building of its first dock, this port city became one of the wealthiest cities in the world through maritime trade. Much of the architecture reflects this period of prosperity.

Belfast, a WWII navel ship that has been permanently docked on the Thames since 1978 as an Imperial War Museum. The buildings in the distance are located in an area known as Canary Wharf, home of London's tallest building, One Canada Square, with its pyramid-shaped roof. On the left with its green glowing top is Tower 42, a cantilevered building with three asymmetrical sections hanging from the building's central core. The bullet-shaped building to its right is the 30 St Mary Axe.

This panoramic photograph of the Tower Bridge was taken by James Blakeway. It features one of London's best known landmarks, the Tower Bridge, named after its own two impressive towers. Completed in 1894 and considered a masterpiece of its time, the middle of the bridge can be raised to permit large vessels to pass the Tower Bridge. It used to be raised about 50 times a day, but now is only raised 4 to 5 times per week. The bridge is 197 feet long and its towers rise to a height of 141 feet. To allow passage up the Thames of the large mastedships of the day, the bridge had to offer 140 feet of clearance.

In the center of the square is the statue of the Goddess Cybele. On the right is Banco de Espana, completed in 1891 in a style inspired by Italian and French architecture. Centered in the photograph is the Palacio de Comunicaciones, one of the most beautiful buildings in Madrid. To the left of the Palacio de Comunicaciones is the Puerta de Alcala or Alcala Gate, which is the most famous and representative monument in the city. The Alcala Gate was formerly an entrance to the walled city.

This panoramic photograph of Monte Carlo was taken by James Blakeway. Monte Carlo is a section of the city-state of Monaco, wedged in between the Mediterranean and France along the French Riviera. It is the most densely populated country in the world and any new development must be built on land reclaimed from the sea. It is most famous for its casinos, beaches and sightings of famous people. Seen in this photograph is Monte Carlo’s yacht harbor surrounded by luxury resorts and hotels. Monaco annually hosts the Monaco Grand Prix, one the oldest races on the Formula One automobile racing circuit.
