Albany, New York City Skyline Picture - Panoramic Picture

This panoramic photograph of Albany was taken by James Blakeway. The Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza is the brightly lit complex that houses many of New York's state offices. The tallest building is the 44-story Corning Tower. The Meeting Center, referred to as the "Egg", is the only curvilinear building in the complex and contains two auditoriums. Henry Hudson, for whom the Hudson River is named, discovered Albany while seeking a shorter route to the far-east in 1609. The city, first settled by the Dutch in 1624, became the capital of the state of New York in 1797.

To the right of downtown is the US Naval Academy. Built in 1845, the US Naval Academy fronts on the Severn River and the Chesapeake Bay. Centered downtown is the Maryland State Capitol. Founded in 1645, Annapolis once served as the Capital of the United States. Architecturally, Annapolis boasts some of the finest 17th and 18th Century buildings in the country, including the residences of all four Maryland signers of the Declaration of Independence.

To its right is SunTrust Plaza , with a single bright light atop its tiered crown. Westin Peachtree Plaza , the cylindrical glass building, was once the tallest hotel in the world. The Georgia State Capitol, with its gold dome, is visible on the right side of this panorama.

To its right is 191 Peachtree Tower, crowned with lighted columns. Westin Peachtree Plaza with its brightly lit crown is partially visible behind 191 Peachtree Tower and was once the tallest hotel in the world. Further to the right is the 60-story SunTrust Plaza , which is identifiable by its single, bright light at its top. Further right is Atlanta ’s tallest building, Bank of America Plaza, with its brightly lit pyramidal roof. To the far right is the area referred to as Midtown which is home to many of Atlanta ’s skyscrapers.

The three tallest buildings in Midtown, from left to right, are Promenade II, 1180 Peachtree (commonly referred to as Symphony Tower), and One Atlantic Center. The tallest building on the right side of the panorama is Bank of America Plaza, with its brightly lit, pointed roof. To the far right is the Georgia Dome with its white fiberglass fabric roof, home to the Atlanta Falcons football team. Atlanta was incorporated in 1845 and, today, is a major business city and transportation hub, with the busiest airport in the world.

Located at the far left, only two blocks from Babe Ruth's birthplace, is Oriole Park at Camden Yards, home to the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. Centered in the photograph along the Inner Harbor is the area known as Harborplace, a retail shopping, restaurant, and entertainment area. Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland, has many historic neighborhoods and landmarks including the U.S. Frigate Constellation, the last tall-ship built by the navy.

Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world, which crosses the Charles River. Behind the left bridge tower is the TD Banknorth Garden, home to the Boston Celtics basketball team and the Boston Bruins hockey team. Behind the right bridge tower is John Hancock Tower, the tallest building in Boston. Boston is rich with United States history; the American Revolution began here in 1770 when British troop fired on an angry mob, killing six citizens.

It features a spectacular view of Charleston as seen looking across the mouth of the Ashley River where it empties into Charleston Harbor. Centered in the distance is the U.S.S. Yorktown (CV-10), commissioned in 1943 and named after the famous U.S.S. Yorktown (CV-5) sunk at Midway. The oldest city in South Carolina, Charleston is famous for its picturesque streets, houses, and other 18th Century monuments. It was also the scene of the first incident of the Civil War, the firing on Fort Sumter. On the waterfront, toward the right tip of the peninsula, is White Point Gardens, where many Civil War cannons are displayed. Charleston is a major regional port and manufacturing center.

At the far left, with its brightly-lit roof, is Odell Plaza. Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and the number one tourist destination in the Carolinas. It has become a major American financial center and is an important service and distribution point for the Southeast.

Shedd Aquarium, the world’s largest aquarium for most of the 20th century. Just inland is The Field Museum of Natural History named after Marshall Field, the wealthiest and most powerful businessman in Chicago during the late 19th century. Further left is Soldier Field, home to the Chicago Bears football team. Centered with its twin antennas is the 110-floor Willis Tower, formerly known as Sears Tower. Moving right is the tallest building in Chicago, the Willis Tower, formerly known as the Sears Tower. It is easily identified by its multi-tiered design and two communication antennas. At the time of its completion in 1974, it was the tallest building in the world and held this rank for nearly 25 years. Further right in the background with a single antenna, is the second tallest building, Trump International Hotel and Tower. Aon Center, the tallest building to the right of Trump Tower, is the third tallest building in Chicago.

Cincinnati's tallest building is the 49-story Carew Tower. PNC Tower, with its pyramid-shaped roof, was finished in 1913 and was the fifth tallest building in the world when completed. The bridges crossing the Ohio River from left to right include the Brent Spence Bridge, Clay Wade Bailey Bridge, Roebling Suspension Bridge, Central Bridge, L&N Bridge and the Dan Carter Beard Bridge.

The tallest building is Marriott Renaissance Center, the tall cylindrical building surrounded by four tall office buildings that make up the Renaissance Center complex. The large stadium with the sloped roof is Ford Field, home to the Detroit Lions football team. Directly behind Ford Field is Comerica Park, home to the Detroit Tigers baseball team. The Tigers’ previous ballpark, Tiger Stadium, can be seen in the distance with its white exterior. Detroit is known as “the automobile capital of the world.”

On the left of the panorama is Duluth's famous Aerial Lift Bridge. It was first built in 1905 as an aerial transfer bridge with a huge gondola that could carry 60 tons of traffic including people, automobiles and horse drawn wagons. In 1929, the bridge was modified to support a vertical lift bridge to accommodate the increasing population and tourists. The city's harbor welcomes over 1000 freighters annually which can be viewed up close from Duluth's Canal Park.

The gold-domed Connecticut State Capitol is visible left of Travelers Tower. The bridge to the far right is Bulkeley Bridge, which was built in 1908. Mark Twain, the prolific American author, resided in Hartford from 1871 to 1891. During this very creative time, he wrote classics such as Life on The Mississippi and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
