Albany, New York City Skyline Picture - Panoramic Picture

This panoramic photograph of Albany was taken by James Blakeway. The Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza is the brightly lit complex that houses many of New York's state offices. The tallest building is the 44-story Corning Tower. The Meeting Center, referred to as the "Egg", is the only curvilinear building in the complex and contains two auditoriums. Henry Hudson, for whom the Hudson River is named, discovered Albany while seeking a shorter route to the far-east in 1609. The city, first settled by the Dutch in 1624, became the capital of the state of New York in 1797.

To the right of downtown is the US Naval Academy. Built in 1845, the US Naval Academy fronts on the Severn River and the Chesapeake Bay. Centered downtown is the Maryland State Capitol. Founded in 1645, Annapolis once served as the Capital of the United States. Architecturally, Annapolis boasts some of the finest 17th and 18th Century buildings in the country, including the residences of all four Maryland signers of the Declaration of Independence.

It features a view of the expansive downtown metropolitan area with the Georgia Dome, home of the Atlanta Falcons football team, to the far right. Pictured right of center, in the foreground, is the corporate headquarters building of The Coca-Cola Company. To its left, is the sprawling campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology. Centered in the photograph in the distance is Stone Mountain, a huge granite monolith, with a deep carving memorializing the leaders of the Confederacy. On the left side of the photograph, in the distance, is the popular uptown area known as Buckhead.

The three tallest buildings in Midtown, from left to right, are Promenade II, 1180 Peachtree (commonly referred to as Symphony Tower), and One Atlantic Center. The tallest building on the right side of the panorama is Bank of America Plaza, with its brightly lit, pointed roof. To the far right is the Georgia Dome with its white fiberglass fabric roof, home to the Atlanta Falcons football team. Atlanta was incorporated in 1845 and, today, is a major business city and transportation hub, with the busiest airport in the world.

This rapidly expanding metropolis is the capital of Texas and home to the University of Texas. The tallest building in Austin is Frost Bank Tower with its brightly lit crown. To its right, in the distance, is the Texas State Capitol with its domed roof. University of Texas Tower is the brightly lit tower to the right of the capitol. Known for its vibrant live music scene, Austin is the 4th largest capital city and the 17th largest city in the United States.

Located at the far left, only two blocks from Babe Ruth's birthplace, is Oriole Park at Camden Yards, home to the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. Centered in the photograph along the Inner Harbor is the area known as Harborplace, a retail shopping, restaurant, and entertainment area. Baltimore, the largest city in Maryland, has many historic neighborhoods and landmarks including the U.S. Frigate Constellation, the last tall-ship built by the navy.

To the left of center is the downtown Boston financial district and to the right of center is the historic North End and Christ Church, better known as Old North Church, with its white steeple. To the right of the North End is the Charles River with Cambridge, Massachusetts, in the distance. Just left of the bridge, spanning the Charles River, is Boston’s TD Banknorth Garden, home to the Boston Celtics basketball team and the Boston Bruins hockey team. Centered in the distance is the area known as Back Bay. The American Revolution began in Boston in 1770, when British troops fired on an angry mob.

Zakim Bunker Hill Bridge, the widest cable-stayed bridge in the world, which crosses the Charles River. Behind the left bridge tower is the TD Banknorth Garden, home to the Boston Celtics basketball team and the Boston Bruins hockey team. Behind the right bridge tower is John Hancock Tower, the tallest building in Boston. Boston is rich with United States history; the American Revolution began here in 1770 when British troop fired on an angry mob, killing six citizens.

It features a spectacular view of Charleston as seen looking across the mouth of the Ashley River where it empties into Charleston Harbor. Centered in the distance is the U.S.S. Yorktown (CV-10), commissioned in 1943 and named after the famous U.S.S. Yorktown (CV-5) sunk at Midway. The oldest city in South Carolina, Charleston is famous for its picturesque streets, houses, and other 18th Century monuments. It was also the scene of the first incident of the Civil War, the firing on Fort Sumter. On the waterfront, toward the right tip of the peninsula, is White Point Gardens, where many Civil War cannons are displayed. Charleston is a major regional port and manufacturing center.

Charlotte, North Carolina

This panorama of Charlotte was taken by James Blakeway and features a twilight view of downtown Charlotte. On the far left, with its brightly-lit roof, is Odell Plaza. Moving to the right and located in the center of Uptown Charlotte is the tallest building in the city, the 60-story Bank of America Corporate Center. To the far right is the 3rd tallest building in Charlotte, The Vue. It was completed in 2010 and is a 677-foot tall skyscraper. Charlotte is the largest city in North Carolina and a top tourist destination in the Carolinas. Its proximity to a wide variety of markets has led to Charlotte's maturation as a financial and distribution center for the Southeastern United States.

This aerial panorama of Chicago was taken over Lake Michigan by James Blakeway. On the far left, almost fully surrounded by water, is the Adler Planetarium. Further up the shoreline is the John G. Shedd Aquarium, the world’s largest aquarium for most of the 20th century. Just inland is The Field Museum of Natural History named after Marshall Field, the wealthiest and most powerful businessman in Chicago during the late 19th century. Further left is Soldier Field, home to the Chicago Bears football team. Centered with its twin antennas is the 110-floor Willis Tower, formerly known as Sears Tower. Grant Park is also center, featuring the spectacular Buckingham Fountain. To the far right is Navy Pier.

The tallest building on the left is the Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower), which stands at 1,450 feet and 110 stories high. The tall building left of center is the 92-story Trump International Hotel and Tower. The tallest building on the right side of the panorama is the John Hancock Center. Visible along the shoreline is the 15-story tall Ferris wheel, one of the many attractions of the 50-acre park known as Navy Pier.

At the time of its completion in 1974, it was the tallest building in the world and held this rank for nearly 25 years. Further right in the background with a single antenna, is the second tallest building, Trump International Hotel and Tower. Aon Center, the tallest building to the right of Trump Tower, is the third tallest building in Chicago.

Directly behind the ball park is the tallest building in Cincinnati, the Great American Tower at Queen City Square. The Ohio River runs along the entire southern border of Ohio and is the largest tributary, by volume, of the Mississippi River.

To the left of Jacobs Field is Gund Arena, home of the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball team. Cleveland is strategically located for transportation and commerce because of its excellent harbors, making it one of the busiest ports on the Great Lakes.

On the far left, the two tallest skyscrapers are One Nationwide Plaza and Three Nationwide Plaza, part of the larger multi-building complex known as Nationwide Plaza. To their right is William Green Building, with its pyramid-shaped roof. The large building in the center foreground is the 31-floor AEP Building. Continuing right and nestled among the existing skyscrapers is LeVeque Tower. It was the tallest building in Columbus from 1927 until 1974. Columbus was founded in 1812 and is the capital and largest city in Ohio.

This panorama of downtown Dallas, Texas, was taken by James Simmons. It features a twilight view of downtown with its modern architecture and vibrant designs. The tallest building on the left is Chase Tower, known for its unique seven-story keyhole near the top of the building. In the middle distance is the brightly-lit American Airlines Center, a multi-purpose arena and home to the Dallas Mavericks and the Dallas Stars. Moving right and outlined in green neon is Bank of America Plaza, the tallest building in the city. Continuing right is Reunion Tower, one of the most recognizable landmarks with its geodesic dome and, to the far right is the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge.

Moving right is Trammel Crow Center has the pyramid shaped and Fountain Place with its triangular shaped roof. Further right is Nations Bank Plaza, and at 72 floors, is the tallest in Dallas. To the far right is Reunion Tower which houses a hotel and revolving restaurant. Dallas began as a trading post in 1841 and has become one of the Southwest's largest business and cultural centers. The 1930 discovery of oil southwest of the city brougt much of the growth and prosperity to the area.

On the left side is the Renaissance Center, a group of seven interconnected skyscrapers, purchased in 1996 by General Motors for their global headquarters. The tall central tower is the Detroit Marriott, the tallest all-hotel skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere. The large stadium on the right is Ford Field, home to the Detroit Lions football team. Directly behind Ford Field is Comerica Park, home to the Detroit Tigers baseball team. Detroit serves as a major river port connecting the Great Lakes system to the Saint Lawrence Seaway.

Pictured on the far right is Detroit’s tallest building, the 73-story Detroit Marriott hotel, which is one of seven interconnected skyscrapers that comprise the GM Renaissance Center complex. The round building centered is Cobo Arena. It is part of Cobo Center complex, which hosts the North American International Auto Show. Moving left is Joe Louis Arena, home to the Detroit Red Wings hockey team.

On the left of the panorama is Duluth's famous Aerial Lift Bridge. It was first built in 1905 as an aerial transfer bridge with a huge gondola that could carry 60 tons of traffic including people, automobiles and horse drawn wagons. In 1929, the bridge was modified to support a vertical lift bridge to accommodate the increasing population and tourists. The city's harbor welcomes over 1000 freighters annually which can be viewed up close from Duluth's Canal Park.

This panorama taken by James Blakeway spotlights the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and the Glen Canyon Dam, which is located near Page, Arizona. Established in 1972, the recreation area offers visitors over 1.3 million acres of lake, desert, and canyon country for solitude and exploration. The dam forms Lake Powell, the second largest man-made reservoir in the U.S. with a shoreline of 1,960 miles and a capacity of 26.2 million acre-feet of water. Constructed between 1956 and 1966, the dam is the key unit of the Colorado River Storage Project and was built to improve delivery and allocation of river flow, provide water storage for years of drought, and generate hydroelectricity.


Grand Canyon National Park Panorama

The view from Desert View Point in Grand Canyon National Park is a spectacular panorama. At right is Desert View Watchtower, a National Historic Landmark, designed by architect Mary Colter and completed in 1933. Inspired by towers constructed elsewhere in the Southwest by ancestral Puebloan people centuries ago, the Watchtower provides amazing 360 degree views of its surroundings.
